Five Things You Need to Know Today is a Patch column that provides readers with essential, daily information at a glance. Check back later for more, and let us know what you think of the new feature in the comments section.

1. Ah, Belmont, whose unofficial motto is "Detour, Road Closed." There will be delays on Concord Avenue from Pleasant Street (where the Police Station and Town Hall are located) to Mill Street as the roadway is being resurfaced and the road is reduced to one lane. And there is more work on Winter Street to the Lexington line. In addition, Creeley Road (behind the Fire Department headquarters) from Slade to Beech streets is having its water mains replaced while finishing work continues on School and Orchard streets. And Goden Street remains a work in progress.

2. What better place to bring your toddler and preschooler than Playtime at the Belmont Public Library. It's a friendly drop-in, informal playgroup where both children and adults can meet new friends. Call the Children's Room at 617-993-2880 with any questions.

3. It will feel like fall for the first time tonight – in the low 50s? Already? – so why not bundle up and cheer on Belmont High School's football team as they take on Bedford. Here's hoping the varsity, which looked good against Melrose in last week's opener, can emulate the freshman team's big-time victory, 22-0, at Bedford yesterday. The fun begins at 6 p.m. at Harris Field on Concord Avenue.

4. The Friday afternoon movie at the Beech Street Center will be 'You Again' (2010) about a woman whose brother is about to marry the girl who bullied her through high school. Betty White co-stars. It's rated PG and starts at 1 p.m.

5. This Day in History

On this day in 1925, Riley B. King, better known as B.B. King, the King of the Blues, was born near Indianola, Mississippi.
