Belmont High School Senior Nathan Worrell sprinted home in third in the 55 meter dash at Saturday's Division 2 championships held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.
Worrell came into the Division 2 meet with the best qualifying time but placed in 6.75 seconds behind sophomore Taj-Amir Torres of Amherst-Pelham Regional who finished in 6.48 seconds. Senior PJ Hayes of Walpole came in second in 6.69 seconds.
Worrell will lead two teammates who will be performing in the Massachusetts State Championships this weekend.
Worrell is currently the 16th seed in the state meet but his 6.40 second season best will make him a sprinter who could race to a very high place.
Junior Lucas Ribeiro was the top non-senior in the shot put, throwing the 12- pound ball 49 feet and a half inch, a two foot improvement on his seasons best to place 6th. Ribeiro will be seeded 18th and the fourth ranked junior in the state meet.
Fellow junior Chris Sandvik made the state meet as the final qualifier after finishing 8th in the 600 meter in the Div. 2 meet in 1:25.09, one second faster then he's run this indoor season. In the same race, senior Chris Rizzo finished 20th in 1:29.23.
Junior Julia Lenef, Belmont High's only female trackster at the D2 meet, finished 11th in the 1000 meter in 3:09.58.
The Massachusetts State Meet will take place Saturday, Feb. 23 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.
