Hecht Announces Run For Tolman's Seat; Primary Set: Dec. 13
Watertown State Rep. joins Brownsberger in race to represent 2nd Suffolk and Middlesex District.
The Secretary of State's Office announced today, Oct. 13, that the primary election to fill the seat held by State Sen. Steven Tolman will be Tuesday, Dec. 13.
And Will Brownsberger, who announced last month that he was running for the seat opened when Tolman was elected President of the Massachusetts ALF-CIO last week, will have a challenger in the Democrat primary.
State Rep. Jonathan Hecht, who represents Watertown and West Cambridge on Beacon Hill, announced today that he is running to succeed the Brighton-native for the 2nd Suffolk and Middlesex District, which is comprised of Watertown, Belmont and parts of Cambridge, Allston-Brighton, the Fenway and the Back Bay.
Hecht's candidancy was expected since the Watertown resident told Watertown Patch he was "seriously looking at running for the senate seat" after the Watertown 9/11 ceremony.
The winner of that primary will go on to meet a Republican challenger and third party candidates in the general election to be held Tuesday, Jan. 10.
The final day residents can register to vote in the election is Wednesday, Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving. Town Clerk offices will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. to register voters.
The final day to register for the general election will be Wednesday, Dec. 21.
In his announcement, Hecht said that “Senator Tolman and I share a common goal: to fight heart, head and soul for those who need it most. People are struggling right now. I want to help improve people’s lives and livelihoods.”
“This is a time of great economic uncertainty and frustration with government. We have to get better results from our limited resources, while keeping to our commitment to help people in need. We have to end the short-term fixes and special-interest politics and focus on the building blocks of shared prosperity: education, infrastructure and a healthy environment. And we have to do this together – good government is a team sport.”
Elected to the General Court in 2008, Hecht serves as Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on Elder Affairs and is also a member of the House Committee on Post Audit and Oversight, and the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities. He is a member of the Mental Health Caucus, MBTA caucus and Urban Parks Caucus.
