Summer arrives at 7 p.m. but Belmont residents will already know that fact by this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Belmont, which goes into effect from noon to 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

With temperatures expected to reach the upper 90s and dew points in the 60s, forecasters are calling for heat indices to hit the century mark, going as high as 108 degrees.

A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create the possibility of heat illnesses.

Long durations outside are discouraged during this period. People who are outside are encouraged to stay hydrated.

Places in town to escape the heat in Belmont are the Belmont Public Library which is open until 9 p.m., the Council on Aging's Beech Street Center open until 5 p.m. and there is alway the Studio Cinema that is showing "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" (with a lot of great older British actors going off to very hot India) at 6 p.m. and 8:15 p.m.

The Mass. Department of Conservation and Recreation announced Tuesday afternoon its plans to staff 20 state beaches and wading pools starting tomorrow, three days ahead of the original summer schedule. Check out this list to find the closest pool or beach. 

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.

Belmont and most of the east coast won't get a break on Thursday, as temperatures are expected to hit 98.
