Letter to the Editor: Paulsens Back Hegerty

"Margaret will be able to work with her colleagues to assure that both men and women are well represented ..."

To the editor:

We are writing to support Margaret Hegarty for State Representative.  Having campaigned  door to door with Margaret, we know she will be an effective and enthusiastic advocate for the people of the 24th Middlesex District. She understands  local and state issues  and has the determination to work vigorously on behalf of the citizens in Belmont, Arlington and Cambridge.

Achieving results in the Legislature is not just about your own ideas and goals; it is about building relationships and working with colleagues to fashion sensible  beneficial legislation. Margaret has the skills and  collaborative approach to meet that challenge.

In her roles as prosecutor and public defender, she learned how legislative decisions impact individual lives. As parent of a child in the public schools, Margaret sees first hand the importance of adequate state aid and will work to insure that the suburban towns receive their fair share as cities and towns compete for funds. She also understands the need for good municipal services including Chapter 90 funding, senior services and support for our libraries.

Along with her progressive and  collaborative ideals, Margaret also brings a woman’s perspective to issues. When women are at the table they impact how legislation is written but in Massachusetts only 25 percent of the members of the House and Senate are women.

Government plays a greater role in the lives of women. On issues of health, childcare, women in poverty, young and old, pensions, and insurance, women’s lives are greatly impacted by legislative decisions. Margaret will be able to work with her colleagues to assure that both men and women are well represented as decisions are made.

On Sept. 6 it is important to choose a person who will work to improve the lives of people in the district and across the state. Margaret is that person.
