One Week Remains To Run For Town Office
Only two contested races so far; many Town Meeting slots remain unclaimed.
If you have been thinking about running for town-wide office or becoming a member of Town Meeting, there is one week remaining to submit nomination papers with the required number of signatures to the Town Clerk's Office to be placed on the Town Election ballot.
As of today, voters will be going to the polls on Monday, April 2, with only of pair of contested races: the Board of Selectmen between the School Committee's Dan Scharfman and Andy Rojas of the Planning Board and the Board of Assessors' with incumbent Martin Millane Jr. facing challenger Gerald Natoli.
So far, the two seats on the Belmont School Committee and the five other elected positions chosen by town vote have a single candidate running with no challenger.
Town-wide offices include:
• Town Moderator, 1 seat for one-year term.
• Board of Selectmen, 1 seat for three-year term.
• Board of Assessors, 1 seat for three-year term.
• Board of Cemetery Commissioners, 1 seat for three-year term.
• Board of Health, 1 seat for three-year term.
• Housing Authority, 1 seat for five-year term.
• Trustees of the Public Library, 2 seats for three-year term.
• School Committee, 2 seats for three-year term
• Many Town Meeting representative positions.
Nomination papers are currently available at the Town Clerk’s office and must be returned to the Town Clerk’s office by Monday, Feb. 13 at 5 pm. for the town-wide office.
Candidates must secure the signatures of at least 50 registered voters of the Town of Belmont and return the signed nomination papers by the deadline.
It is recommended that more signatures are collected and submitted in the event that some signatures are invalid.
Before collecting signatures, the candidate must sign the nomination papers and fill in the office for which he/she will be a candidate.
All candidates for town-wide elected office must file campaign finance forms with the Town Clerk's office.
Town Clerk Ellen Cushman said that many Town Meeting incumbents have yet to inform her whether they are seeking re-election.
The elected term for Town Meeting Member is three years, though should a resignation occur, there may be a race for office, you must be at least 18 years old and a registered voter in Belmont.
