Police Log: Man Finds Wallet, Gives It Away to Stranger

March 10 – The dispatch officer received a call just after 2:30 p.m. from a person on Chester Road about an ongoing assault when the line went died and the officer was unable to raise the caller. Officers went to the address to find two brothers in a tussle with the other. The brother who claim to make the call told officers that his older brother barged into his room and accused him of stealing an unknown amount of cash. Brother number one told officers that he beat his brother down in self defense. Not unsurprisingly, the other brother, brother number two, said it was, in fact, his sibling that caused the ruckus in their mother's house and that he was the one who called police. Police decided that they could not determine who was to instigator and decided to arrest both of them. David, 44, and Eric Ray, 42, of 43 Chester Rd. went to the station for assault and battery.

March 11 – Nearly every driver has some embarrassing tale of leaving an item on the roof or hood of a car – coffee, bags, packages, lunch, a baby (I didn't go far) – and then driving away. And that's what happened to a Marsh Street man who decided to leave his wallet on the hood of his car after paying for gas at a service station on Concord Avenue. When he got home, he reached for his pocket and ... oh, no. The Belmont resident immediately retraced his steps but could not find the wallet with $250 in cash. He then went home and cancelled his credit cards. But the next day, a person left a message on the man's Facebook wall saying he found the man's wallet. Will this be a happy ending? Unfortunately, no. Here was the good Samaritan's tale: The Belmont resident was walking down Concord Avenue when he saw something in the street. It turned out to be the Marsh Street man's wallet. The good guy was looking into the wallet for some identification when, as he tells it, a 50-year-old, stocky individual driving a pickup pulled up to him and said the wallet he was holding was, in fact, his. Dispute his own misgivings and not attempting to compare any ID in the wallet with "stocky," the finder gave the wallet to the man. Ugh. A few moments later, the finder then found a Costco credit card on Common Street, this time with the Marsh Street man's name and photo. 'Oh no,' thought the finder, 'this must be the man who's wallet I found and I gave it to the wrong man.' When police asked the Marsh Street man if he could provide them information on the finder so law enforcement could discover if he had a criminal record, the victim decided to keep quiet and not give up the name.

Brotherly loveless

March 12 – A few minutes after 9 a.m., a Bedford, NH woman came to the station to report that jewelry she reported stolen weeks ago to her hometown police was located in a Trapelo Road store. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that jewelry belonging to her mother, who lives in Watertown, was also in the Belmont store. The entire cash value of the stolen rocks reached about $800. With that added discovery, police attention turned to her 38-year-old brother who lives with his mother. He is going to be charged with receiving stolen property over $250.
