Quebrada Baking Coming to Belmont Center

Arlington-based bakery to open third shop in former Frankie's Catch of the Day.

Where once salmon, lobster and scallops were sold, Belmont shoppers will have the opportunity to purchase world-class breakfast baked goods, barista coffees and teas and homemade goodies as Quebrada Baking Company transforms the long-time Frankie's Catch of the Day into a high-end bakery, according to town officials.

The East Arlington-based retail bakery and cafe company, now in its 35th year, has begun talks with the town's Health Department to create its third shop – its current locations are in East Arlington (208 Massachusetts Ave. on the same block as the Capitol Theater) and Wellesley Hills (272 Washington St.) – at 19 Leonard St. at the corner of Channing Road.

The 650-square-foot store front commercial space is undergoing $2,000 in demolition work to prepare it for its transformation.

It is reported that the independent bakery will have limited baking at the store with the majority of the baked good coming off-site. The two Quebrada Baking Company stores are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week. Its other locations have outdoor seating giving it a cafe feel.

If the company, started by Kay Wiggin in 1977, obtains the myriad of permits needed to open, it will be the second bakery/coffee shop scheduled to open this year in Belmont Center as KOCA Barbershop, located at 80 Leonard St., will become Mim's Coffee Shop.
