The Week in Review: Yes on Substation

The news and events of the past week in Belmont.

In a vote that surprised a number of people, the Special Town Meeting voted unanimously to approve $53.7 million in bonds to construct a new electrical substation on Flanders Road. The article passed after members of the Municipal Light Advisory Board spoke in support of the largest capital project in town history. The average monthly bill for Belmont Municipal Light Department customers will now increase $11 to $15. The article also allows the Belmont Board of Selectmen to negotiate with utility giant NSTAR on an alternative system.

The anticipated move of the Thomas Clark House, the pre-Revoluntionary War house on Common Street slatted to be transported a half-mile to a temporary location on Concord Avenue, was delayed by up to a couple of weeks due to permitting issues with the town. That action comes only days after the Board of Selectmen approved a license to the town's Historic District Commission and a Boston-based architectural preservation non-profit approving the move.

Winn Brook resident and educator Pascha Griffiths took out nomination papers this week to run for one of two seats on the Belmont School Committee. She joins current member Anne Lougee and Matt Sullivan of the Board of Library Trustees in the race.

Belmont Savings Bank is expanding into a new town as it will open a branch in a Waltham Shaw's Market this spring.

The removal of a Ron Paul for President sign caused neighbors to battle it out verbally before police arrived.

Valentine's Day is approaching: a Belmont card designer on creating valentines and the Town Clerk who plays Cupid all year long.
