At 7:45 a.m. today, Friday, the Belmont High School Field Hockey team were doing ten push-ups on the turf on Harris Field. A ball had hit a defender's foot inside the strike zone and Head Coach Jessica Smith did not want to see that happen.
"Keep your sticks down. We don't want to give up a penalty corner tomorrow," said Smith, referring to tomorrow's Division 2 North Final against Watertown High School.
Belmont won their chance against Watertown by dominating second-seed Newburyport Wednesday, 2-1, as their game has been improving throughout the three playoff games where they have outscored their opponents, 10-2.
Despite the importance of the game, the girls were not showing any pressure, laughing a lot while going through the team's hour-long practice.
"I feel good and the team is pretty loose," said Smith of her preparation for Belmont's first-ever North Sectional final.
"We know we'll have to play really well against Watertown," said Smith, pointing to the Marauder's 2-0 loss to the Red Raiders last month.
"But this team has the players to do it," she said.
Tomorrow's game will take place at 11 a.m. at North Andover High School, 430 Osgood St., North Andover, 01845.
