Week in Review April 25 - May 1

A look back at the week's top stories.

It certainly was a busy first week of existence for Belmont Patch.

Just when you thought you could relax with a warm weekend in hand, a "catastrophic" water main break in Weston resulted in Belmont joining 30 other communities and 2 million people in the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority district to boil water until further notice.

The reaction from Belmont residents was mixed from raiding the Shaw's of all its water to diners hitting their favorite restaurants.

Our first day, Tuesday, was filled with interesting articles including videos of the first ever Open Studios in Belmont and Opening Day for Belmont Youth Baseball as well as an interview with School Superintendent George Entwhistle.

But the one of most importance for town residents was the opening night of Town Meeting that occurred Monday.

Town Meetings second night was a bit slower in tempo and actual votes but a review of the first two nights showed a list of accomplishments that, while not exciting, will affect the lives of residents.

While not officially announced and not coming as a surprise to anyone, town officials are gearing up for a Proposition 2 1/2 override with a $2 million price tag.

In the mean time, as a stopgap measure, the Warrant Committee transferred $300,000 to the school department to prevent a devastating number of layoffs from occurring.

On a sad note, a falling limb that broke away from a tree during gusty conditions Thursday afternoon seriously injured a nine-year-old boy on Shaw Road.  He remains in serious condition at a Boston hospital.

Belmont Boys' Lacrosse team accomplished a first this week, defeating perennial powerhouse Lexington while Girls' Softball continues to struggle but are showing better form.

The High School was also the location of the student-directed One Act Plays. I hope you got a chance to go.
