A look at the issues affecting Belmont this week

On May 2, the town of Belmont came to the rescue. After a day of empty shelves in local markets, the officials conducted a water give away – distributing one 24-bottle case of water to each household – at the High School that caused a rush to the location.

Later on May 2, it was learned that Nicholas Marrama, the nine-year-old boy struck by a tree branch had died. His funeral was held on May 6.

Town Meeting held its third, and, by far, shortest meeting on May 3 as it finished the non-budgetary portion of the annual event. The Town Meeting rejected, for a second time, an attempt by supporters of Minuteman Career & Technical High School to help fund a feasibility study.

Earlier that day, the Board of Selectmen officially voted the date – June 14 – and amount of the Proposition 2 1/2 override vote.

Very early on May 4, the state lifted the boil water order to the relief of Belmont residents, who came out to see "Antiques Roadshow" regular Stuart Whitehurst appraise family treasures at the Belmont Public Library.

Federal authorities in Richmond, Virginia on May 5 announced the arrest of a Belmont resident who was part of an international sham marriage scheme that united Russian nationals with US sailors. In a twist, unlike the other cases, it was a Russian man and a female US sailor from Louisville, Kentucky.

May 6 saw Belmont businesses participate in the "Taste of the Towns" event sponsored by the Watertown Belmont Chamber of Commerce while on May 7, the Board of Selectmen revealed a small portion of their strategy to obtain public support for the coming override.

In sports, the Girls' Lacrosse came close to knocking off a state powerhouse, the Belmont Boys' Lacrosse did knock off a state powerhouse, Boys' Tennis rolls along, while Boys' baseball is knocking on the playoff door, once again.
