Where Do Drivers Speed Most in Belmont?
Is it Trapelo Road? Pleasant Street? The long stretches of Concord Avenue? You tell us.
We all know there are spots where people tend to speed in Belmont?
Tell us in the comments section which are the most dangerous and might need a raised section, another stop sign, more crosswalks or another measure to slow down traffic.
Then next Wednesday, we'll run a poll based on the top five answers we received in this callout.

Cross Street going over the raised crosswalk across from Winn Brook - people think its fun catching some air.

Beech Street is too dense for the speed that most drivers attempt to drive. In efforts to bypass RT 60, the street is used too often for the size of the street.

Beech Street. It's the autobahn of Belmont.

Add School Street, specifically the curve in front of the Burbank School. Many drivers take the curve too fast and/or fail to stay in their own lane. Plus, the crosswalk is poorly placed so that pedestrians are in danger. Suggestions, a crosswalk box at Sharpe & School, plus pedestrian warning signs in the center of the roadway to keep drivers in their lanes.

I would suggest people pay more attention to Trapelo Road/Belmont Street. To the best of my knwoledge, 3 people have been killed in crosswalks and 1 severely ingured in the crosswalk by Trapelo Road CVS/Fire Station only a few years back. Cars don't stop for pedestrians in crosswalks, the new crosswalk signs are worthless since no one reads them nor understands them, the bump-out are a waste of tax payers money since it encourages speeding, speed limits are optional, the best, our Police Department does little to nothing to enforce speeding laws anywhere and our Selectmen who are deaf to our constant complaints since they live in quite neighborhoods.

I think the bump-outs are great. We had to cross Trapelo (one way or another) for 13 years getting kids to Butler, and it was not until the bump-out was installed that I felt safe doing it at the crosswalk. The more interesting question to me is why the whole road should not have its travel lanes similarly narrowed; if traffic can squeeze down to one lane in each direction without causing a jam (and it did not; all those years crossing at rush hour in the morning and picking up at the afterschool at rush hour in the evening, I would have seen it), why not squeeze down it along the entire street? If people can't drive in a civil fashion, why reward them with more pavement to be jerks in?

Now that Goden Street/Oakley Road is paved, that stretch has become a magnet for speeding cars, especially those who are trying to get from Concord Avenue to Trapelo Road in a hurry. Perhaps a speedbump by the Chenery School could help slow down drivers once they clear the stop sign at Washington. They have taken away the crosswalks near Chenery on Oakley Road so it feels like you are taking a huge risk on your life if you try and cross Oakley.

School Street---Fom Goden St to Washington St is a speeders delight. Residents have difficulty getting in and out of their driveways. Drivers r ide on your tail and beep their horn when they can't pass you. Courtesy is very much lacking.
Another problem are the 4 way stop sign intersections. Drivers just ignore them and keep on driving. These areas need to be monitored more frequently
"U" Turns on Leonard st., Trapelo rd.,Common St are a frequent occuences and there is never a policeman around.

We need a 4-way stop sign at the intersection of Slade & Creeley. I've lived here for about 5 years and witnessed quite a few accidents and several near misses! Drivers race down Slade and those traveling on Creeley barely stop at the stop sign!

4-way at Slade and Upland, and 4-way at Common and Hastings/Washington. Biggest worries about kids walking to/from Chenery was those two intersections.
