Where Should A Crosswalk Be Added in Belmont

Contribute to a conversation by posting a comment below.

Last year, a reader's concern about the lack of a traffic controls at Trapelo Road and Hawthorne Street was reported in Belmont Patch resulting in this past Town Meeting approving a crossing guard at the location near the Butler School.

Now, we would like to ask readers: Where should a crosswalk be added in Belmont?

What do you think? Let us know by posting a comment in the comments section below.

Waverly & Grant Ave. It's so hard to cross there!

I agree with that crossing - I wait forever there.

Across Pleasant St. at Prospect St. Really dangerous, especially at rush hour both morning and evening and particularly in the dark. Unfortunately, the town promised the Commonwealth not to make any changes on Pleasant St. for five years after its reconstruction. Also, the town engineer doesn't think it's feasible.

Thanks to the citizen who requested a crossing guard at Hawthorne and Trapelo. Thank you for your determination. My children are grown and gone, but when I asked for one at Waverley and Trapelo, 18 years ago (before Hawthorne was necked in), I was informed by the powers that be, that it was too dangerous to put a crossing guard at that intersection. All I could do was shake my head, laugh at the absurdity and pray that my children and I wouldn't be killed every time we crossed. So, thank you again to the citizen who successfully recommended a guard at Hawthorne and Trapelo.

Now, I'd love to see the intersection of Waverley and Trapelo redone. Pedestrians cross Waverley, from the white church to the old fire station, in a straight line. No one walks down to the crosswalk, which is maybe 30 feet from Trapelo Road. And drivers facing east on Trapelo, but turning left on to Waverley, NEVER turn at the designated place. Most drivers turn early, cutting off those who are turning properly, creating many near accidents. The entire intersection (Waverley and Trapelo) is a nightmare for pedestrians and drivers alike.

Oliver and Brighton--the cars never stop for me!
Also, there should be another one on Common right near the Lion's Club that stretches across the entire road

Doesn't matter how many crosswalks are added if our traffic laws aren't enforced. Drivers fail to stop at crosswalks all the time. I live at the Trapelo Road/Poplar Street intersection with the bump-out. It's amazing how few cars actually stop with the high visiblity signs there and you standing at the edge of the bump-out to cross.. Traffic lights would be a better option but require state approval and are far more difficult to get. Just be smart and cross the streets with extereme care. You should worry about yourself and those around you and keep complaining to our elected officials to do a better job to control the excessive speeds traveled and the failure of motor vehicles to complying with our laws.

There needs to be a place to cross Common St near the Lions Club. If you get off the train and want to cross safely, you have to walk to Belmont Center to cross then walk back to the Post Office to cross. Or you have to walk to School St to cross. Most people just dash across the street but it's dicey to do that.
