While it would appear that the intensifying influenza outbreak seems to have skipped by Belmont – only nine documented cases in town according to Belmont Health Director Stefan Russakow – the threat of catching the flu remains high.

Just across the town line in Arlington, flu cases are up 15-fold with 77 resident documented having the influenza while Boston has declared a public health emergency Wednesday, Jan. 9 as instances of the flu were ten times higher than just last year.

Also Wednesday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reported 18 flu-related deaths in the Commonwealth so far this season.

But fear not: according to the Center for Disease Control and Russakow, there is still time to get a flu shot. And with the weekend weather expected to be spring-like – temperatures in the low and mid-50s – it would be a great time to head to Belmont's three pharmacies to get poked.
