On Monday afternoon, students from Belmont High School were transforming the hallway in the lower level of the Belmont Public Library into a whimsical floral landscape filled with outsized plants and books ready to be opened. On the main floor, volunteers were hanging art by local artists on the theme of flowers in bloom: oils, photographs, watercolors and other media. At 4 p.m., there was only one word that both Town Clerk Ellen O'Brien Cushman and the workers in the Town Clerk's office were using to describe voter turnout in Belmont. "Big," said Cushman, saying that she is seeing a great number of voters coming out to vote at the town's eight precincts. By the early afternoon, the town was predicting about 7 in 10 of the 16,000 register voters will come out to vote for state-wide offices, the local state representatives' race and a ballot question for the town.
