Nearly $20,000 for voting system taken to help repair playground closed since November.
Every so often at Belmont Town Meeting – usually on one of the final nights when the budget is being read – a representative will speak to the assembled with a heartfelt plea about something or another that was left off the funding list. Two years ago it was Maryann Scali's lament that the Grove Street tennis courts were destined for demolition. And years before, it was the elimination of elementary school librarians. "Why," they ask the 290 representatives, "was this abandoned? What does this say about us that we can't fund this simple request?" And like Henry V before Agincourt, a seemingly insignificant request hits a collective nerve with the assembled representatives and the town's legislative body quickly evolves into a community of…

With the road unencumbered with opponents, Belmont's Mitt Romney drove through Nebraska and Oregon to win the state's Republican presidential primary Tuesday by more than 60 percentage points over his closest challengers. Romney did not campaign in the states other than a rally last week in Omaha and did not issue any comments on winning, according to Politico. In fact, the big news in Nebraska was the upset win by part-time cow poke and State Sen. Deb Fischer to become the Republican candidate for US Senate.

Due to delays, two years worth of street repairs will get underway beginning this year.
If you live on Creeley Road, you've hit the road jackpot. Creeley and its cross streets of Flett Road and Francis Street will be some of the first roads that will be reconstructed by the town as long-awaited repairs to town streets has been announced this week. Due to an extraordinary delay in putting together proposals and putting out bids, two years worth of road repair will commence in the coming months, according to Glenn Clancy, director of Belmont's Office of Community Development at last week's Warrant Committee's pre-Town Meeting Informational Briefing. Last year, the town allocated $1.8 million and $1.2 million this year in pavement management. But even though the money has been targeted, reconstruction will not start for the 2013…

The good, bad and ugly of Belmont's annual legislative gathering.
At the end of the second night of Belmont's Town Meeting, one well-connected representative said she had her own headline concerning one of the night's vote. "Despite the anticipation by town officials of a heated two-hour debate, Town Meeting ignored the town's long-standing history and quickly voted to approve moving town elections to Tuesdays," she said with a chuckle. "How dare they! Don't they have any respect for tradition?" she laughed, commenting on the overwhelming support of Belmont stripping away 150 years of history and joining the rest of the country voting on the second day of the week. On a night where the humidity inside Belmont High School's auditorium caused hair to curl, the Town Meeting coolly debated and voted on a …

Welcome back after three weeks off. Tonight is the special town meeting articles.
7 p.m. Welcome back, everyone. After a week and a fortnight (love that word) away, the 2012 Belmont Town Meeting reconvenes to begin passing around the town's money in the auditorium of Belmont High School. You can view the Town Meeting on one of Belmont Media Center's cable channels (I forgot which one!) The representative legislative body of the town debated and voted on a limited number of non-financial articles back on April 23 with the creation of a stabilization fund for repairs and capital improvements for Minuteman Tech High School voted down by Town Meeting. Tonight the reps will begin with the financial articles starting with the convening of a Special Town Meeting – for those articles offered after the initial closing of the …
