Dance with Al Natale at the Beech, Join the League and Happy 64th Twiggy

Events occurring in Belmont on Thursday, Sept. 19.

1. The annual benefit fundraiser concert with Al Natale’s Swing Orchestra presented by the Friends of the Belmont Council on Aging takes place tonight at the Beech Street Center. The dancing starts at 7 p.m.; $10 at the door.

2. Help keep Belmont residents informed on upcoming elections and the running of town government by joining the Belmont League of Women Voters which is meeting tonight from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Belmont Public Library's Flett Room.

3. The book club for Chenery Middle School fifth and sixth graders will discuss "My Life as a Book," by Janet Tashjian at 3:15 p.m. in the Flett Room at the Belmont Public Library. Signed up and stop by the Children's Room Desk to pick up a copy of the book.

4. The undefeated (2-0-2) Belmont High School Girls' Soccer team will be tested today by the best team in the Middlesex League, the 4-0 Arlington High SpyPonders which is averaging five goals a game and giving up a half a goal. The tussle takes place at 3:45 p.m. at Harris Field.

5. On this day in 1982, Scott Fahlman posts the first documented emoticons  :-) and :-( on the Carnegie Mellon University Bulletin Board System. Also on this day in 1949, just to make you feel old, Twiggy was born.
