Masquerade Concert Tonight at 7 PM, Learning Facebook and The 75th Anniversary of Scaring A Nation

Events occurring in Belmont on Wednesday, Oct. 30.

1. Hopefully today will be the final day of paving on Leonard Street from Alexander Avenue to Pleasant Street that has been causing traffic snarls for drivers attempting to enter Belmont Center from Route 60 and points east.

2. Join the Belmont High School Orchestra and Wind Ensemble for some spooky music at the Third Annual Family Masquerade Concert at 7 p.m. being held at the Belmont High School Auditorium on Concord Avenue. The hour-long concert (it will finish just before the beginning of Game 6 of the World Series) is a family-oriented event that is free and open to the public.

3. Learn all about "controlling" your Facebook account at the final "Go Digital at the Library" session being held at 3 p.m. in the Flett Room of the Belmont Public Library. Learn to manage your account, adjust settings and post content. No experience necessary; just bring your portable device if you have one. The class is free but space is limited, so register at the reference desk or online.

4. Duplicate Bridge Club meets from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Beech Street Center at 266 Beech St. Every Wednesday the club holds American Contact Bridge League-sanctioned games. All are welcome to play. Cost is $5. Phone 339-223-6484 for more information.

5. Today is the 75th anniversary of Orson Welles and the CBS Mercury Theatre on the Air performance of their version of H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. With the country on edge due to years of economic depression and from the recent "Munich" crisis that nearly brought war to the world, many of the nearly six million around the country who heard the radio play believed that Martians were invading the earth. Word quickly spread and many panicked hearing the "news." If you never have heard the broadcast, treat yourself by going to Youtube for a taste of great radio. Today is also the 75th birthday of my aunt, Elaine Pepe, born just as the program had started. Reportedly a nurse told the attending doctor at Somerville Hospital of the "invasion," who then quickly set the record straight, he being a fan of Orson Welles.
