Night on Cushing Square, Book Club for Middleschoolers, 'A Christmas Carol' Published

Events occurring in Belmont on Thursday, Dec. 19.

• Night on Cushing Square will take place this evening beginning at 5 p.m. Participating stores will remain open until 10 p.m. with raffles, discounts and refreshments; fun for the entire family. Receive a passport at any participating business to have your name entered into a raffle drawing.

• Join your neighbors and friends at the Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St., at 10 a.m. for a lively discussion about current events: past, present and future called "Hot Topics." Recent discussions have been about Whitey Bulger, Social Security, aging in place, and economics. We all have something to offer, and we welcome new members.

• The Book Club for Chenery Middle School students in fifth and sixth grades (the lower school) will be held from 3:15 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Flett Room of the Belmont Public Library.

• Infant Lapsit Storytime at the Belmont Public Library is for infants and pre-walkers. Come enjoy songs, finger plays and rhymes chosen especially for our littlest readers. The fun starts in the Flett Room at 10:30 a.m.

• On this day in 1843, Charles Dickens' Yuletide tale, "A Christmas Carol," was first published in Britain.
