Powers Musics' Schukis Sings Dietrich at the Beech, Office Hours and In Cold Blood

Events occurring in Belmont on Friday, Nov. 15.

1. The first of three free concerts – entitled "...wie einst Lili Marleen" – in the Powers Music Concerts series will be performed today at the Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St., at 1:15 p.m. Powers’ faculty member and mezzo-soprano Vanessa Schukis presents a musical tribute of songs performed by the great actress/singer Marlene Dietrich. The other two concert dates are Jan. 17, 2014 and Valentine's Day, Feb. 14. The series is sponsored by Leader Bank.

2. State Sen. Will Brownsberger's Chief of Staff Barbara Miranda will hold office hours from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St. All are welcome to during this time to discuss issues, ask for help in dealing with state agencies or talk about any other topic of concern.

3. Well-loved local musician Liz Buchanan will be performed original songs and traditional favorites for kids at 10:30 a.m. in the Belmont Public Library's Assembly Room

4. Here's a heads up: Chinese Culture will be taught over the next 10 Mondays beginning, Monday, Nov. 18., from 3 p.m. to 3:45 p.m., at the Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St. In this 10 session class taught by Nicole Crowley a talented Belmont 
High School student, participants will learn about topics including traditional games, holidays, Chinese characters and calligraphy, making Chinese lanterns and 
paper cut and other art forms. The course is free, but registration is required. It is limited to 20 participants. Call  Free, but registration required. Limited to 20 

5. On this day in 1959, farmer Herbert Clutter, his wife, Bonnie and two of their children, Nancy, 16, and Kenyon, 15, were found murdered in their home in Holcomb, Kansas, a crime that became the subject of Truman Capote's non-fiction novel and masterpiece, "In Cold Blood."
