Wednesday's Trash Picked-Up Today, LEGO Club, Podiatrist Clinic and Discovering Vulcan

Events occurring in Belmont on Jan. 2, 2014.

The New Year's celebration pushed back the town's trash collection a day so households whose garbage barrels and recyclables are collected on Wednesday should have them out today and those whose curbside collectables are taken away on Thursday should just wait a day.

• I would call ahead (see below) before making the trek in the snow to the Belmont Public Library to attend the year's first LEGO Club for kindergarten through third grade. Members will be creating their own unique LEGO structures.  All LEGOs will be provided. Just bring your imagination. Sign-up required; please call the Children's Room at 617-993-2880 to sign up.

Podiatrist (and Belmont's Board of Health Chairman) Dr. David Alper is holding a clinic at the Beech Street Center, 266 Beech St., at 11 a.m. The clinic cost is $25; unfortunately, insurance is not accepted. Please sign up in person the day of the clinic at the front desk or by phone at 617-993-2980.

• The Board of Library Trustees will be meeting a half-hour earlier at 7 p.m. to discuss the year's budget and other library-centric topics in the Claflin Room of the Belmont Public Library.

• On this day in 1860, the "discovery" of the planet Vulcan is announced at a meeting of the French Academy of Sciences in Paris. Turned out that there was no such planet between the sun and Mercury effecting the laters solar orbit. It will not be until 2063 – according to Star Trek history – when inhabitants from Vulcan (Vulcans) will make formal contact with the human race, when a routine scouting mission noticed Zeframe Cochrane's first Human warp-speed flight. The survey ship followed Cochrane's vessel back to his base in Bozeman, Montana, to meet the man who had achieved Earth's first faster-than-light travel, and subsequently established formal diplomatic relations with Earth.
