McLean Hospital, the largest psychiatric affiliate of Harvard Medical School, participates in the Global Web Screening of Hidden Pictures, an award-winning new film about global mental health, on World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10. The innovative media event, titled “1 Film, 1 Worldwide Discussion,” will bring together a broad group of international organizations and advocates to host live and online screenings of Hidden Pictures and create a global dialogue about mental health issues.

The producer of Hidden Pictures is physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston, who grew up in the shadow of her father’s schizophrenia and has spent years caring for the underserved. Ruston has been producing films and creating social campaigns about mental health topics for over a decade with the aim of increasing compassion and promoting action.

Recently awarded “Most Moving Documentary” at Seattle’s True Independent Film Festival, Hidden Pictures explores deeply personal mental health stories in India, China, South Africa, France and the US, and reveals a global epidemic of silence on mental health.

“From my own personal experience, I know too well the obstacles to getting timely services and treatment for mental illness, and the difficulty of speaking openly about mental health” said Ruston. “Filming people around the world has exposed the shared struggles faced by the 450 million people living with mental illness worldwide. I hope that by telling their stories and spotlighting moments of profound compassion, we can spark a dialogue and begin to create change.”
