5. On this day 150 years ago, 385 men of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry under the command of Bowdoin Professor Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain successfully defended the left flank of the Union army at the Battle of Little Round Top against repeated advancement by the 600-man 15th Regiment of Alabama Infantry, exhausted after marching 20 miles in oppressive heat before heading into battle on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg. This 90-minute encounter is considered by some as the turning point of the Civil War. See a wonderful YouTube video of Civil War tour guide Gary Kross describing the events of that day where it happened.
