BELMONT STORM CENTER: Snow Emergency Set To End at 9 AM

Check back here throughout the storm for updates on what's happening in Belmont.

So this web page experiment is to allow one-stop shopping on all news related to the New Year's Nor'easter (some people are actually calling the storm "Winter Storm Hercules").

Noon: Tonight's Belmont High School basketball games – Girls' at Reading and the Boys' hosting the Rockets – have been cancelled.

8:35 a.m.: Just called Public Works and the snow emergency is still scheduled to be lifted as of 9 a.m.
5:55 a.m.: As of 5:55 a.m., the parking ban is still set to be lifted at 9 a.m.

5:50 a.m.: The MBTA buses and commuter trains are running as best they can under the current conditions. There are no weather-related service alerts on Belmont lines.

Jan. 3, 2014

7 p.m.: All town offices, the Belmont Public Library and the Beech Street Center will be closed tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 3.

1:30 p.m.: The Belmont Public Library is closing at 4 p.m. So that means LEGO Club is still on at 3:15 p.m.

1:15 p.m.:
Don't get upset by the meetings of the Board of Library Trustees and the Human Rights Committee have been cancelled.

1:08 p.m.:
Starbucks in the Center is closing at 6 p.m. because of the town-wide parking ban. So expect it to open when the ban is lifted Friday.

12:30 p.m.: I'm told that Concord Avenue is now open. The pole has been set.

12:10 p.m.: Gov. Patrick did NOT declare a state of emergency but did allow workers to head on home at 3 p.m.

Noon: The driving in Belmont Center isn't all that bad. And the delivery truck got through to the Craft Beer Cellar, thank goodness. Read here about the Belmont business' plan to expand its concept nationwide.

All activities at the Beech Street Center – the town's senior center – have been cancelled along with Recreation Department events.

11:10 a.m.: Belmont Light crews are repairing a light pole that was knocked down after being hit by a Mazda on the dangerous, twisting stretch of Concord Avenue just before the intersection of Pleasant and Concord. The crew said the repairs should be finished by noon-ish.

11 a.m.: Belmont's six public schools will be closed on Friday also due to the nor'easter. I predict kids on the sledding hills by noon.

10 a.m.: Driving's still OK on Common Street … at least downhill.

9:35 a.m.: Belmont has declared a snow emergency from 6 p.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday. Don't park on the street or in municipal lots (or school parking areas) or you will be towed.

9 a.m.: A single motor vehicle accident on Upper Concord Avenue has closed the major thoroughfare between Belmont Center and Lexington and Waltham until further notice.

8 a.m.: More than an inch of snow is on the ground but town equipment and private contractors are on the street so most roadways are passable.

Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2014, 8 p.m.: Schools in Belmont will be closed on Thursday, Jan. 2 due to the pending snow storm.
