Belmont Under Winter Storm Warning Until Friday Morning

Travel will become increasingly difficult during the day Thursday.

The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Warning at 3:52 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, for Belmont and most of eastern Massachusetts that will last until 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3.

Travel will become increasingly difficult during the day Thursday as roads become covered and slippery. Driving even on treated roads will be arduous and nearly impossible on unplowed streets and roads.

A coastal storm will bring from 8 to 14 inches of snow in what, at times the NWS call, "near blizzard conditions" during the peak of the storm Thursday night and into Friday morning with snow falling at 1 to 2 inches an hour and winds of between 20 and 30 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. Drifting snow will also be an issue.

Accompanying bitter cold and high winds will result in dangerously low wind chill conditions of between 15 to 25 degrees below zero on Thursday night/Friday morning.
