Mechanical Breakdown Closes Belmont's Underwood Pool

Historic outdoor swimming "hole" should be open by Tuesday afternoon.

A "mechanical breakdown" in the filtration system of Belmont's historic Underwood Pool has closed the watery playground for the weekend and today, Monday, Aug. 5, according to the Belmont Recreation Department.

The part that will repair the broken part of the aging machinery will be installed tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 6, so the 101-year-old pool is scheduled to open in the afternoon.

It is not usual in the past few years that mechanical hiccups have closed one of the oldest outdoor swimming pools in the country. Last year in August, a valve in the pool's filter house failed which force the pool to close for several days.

The pool's threadbare condition, outdated design and haphazard mechanics – many parts are no longer being manufactured – that resulted in the town moving forward with plans to potentially replace the current facility with a $4.2 million pool with a diving board, children section and lap lanes.
