Triple-Digit Temps Today; Stay Inside, Get Cool

The Library is open until 5 p.m. and Beech Street Center until 4 p.m. Studio Cinema has offerings until 8 p.m., Starbucks and Dunkin's open until 10 p.m.

The National Weather Service issued a Excessive Heat Warning for Belmont and eastern Massachusetts that will remain in effect from noon to 7 p.m. as high temperatures will top out at 101 degrees (F) with a heat index value (combines air temperature and relative humidity in an attempt to determine how hot it feels) will feel like 110 degrees.

The hottest conditions will occur around midday and into the evening.

An excessive heat warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur, said the Weather Service. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely.

The Weather Service said citizens should check in on relatives and neighbors especially the elderly or those without air conditioning.

The National Weather Service advice people to:

• Avoid prolonged work in the sun or in poorly ventilated areas.

• Drink plenty of fluids.

• Stay in an air-conditioned environment.
