The is pleased to announce that The Leftovers by Belmont author Tom Perrotta has been selected as the featured title for One Book One Belmont 2012, the library’s fourth town-wide reading program.
The library and a dozen co-sponsoring community groups invite town residents to read the novel and participate in book discussions and other activities during the months of September and October. The author is scheduled to speak in Belmont on Tuesday evening, Oct. 23.
The Leftovers imagines an event called the “Sudden Departure” in which millions of people around the world suddenly disappear with no apparent reason why some people vanish and others remain.
How do those left behind carry on? Do they fall apart from grief, prepare for the end of days, or put one foot in front of the other and mow the lawn? Perrotta explores how residents of the fictional town of Mapleton try to find meaning in lives that have been shattered by the loss of spouses and children, neighbors and friends.
The Leftovers is Perrotta’s “most mature, absorbing novel,” wrote critic Ron Charles in The Washington Post.
“Though he still hasn't left the suburbs ... [he] has managed to prove again, as Updike and Cheever did, that here in the quiet, tree-lined streets of a nice neighborhood, people are fighting cosmic battles with their own and others' demons."
The Leftovers has been named a New York Times Notable Book; O the Oprah Magazine Favorite Book of the Year; and one of the Best Books of 2011 by Kirkus Reviews, Amazon.com, GQ, NPR (Fresh Air), The Washington Post, The Seattle Times, and The Book Page.
Perrotta is the author of six works of fiction, including the novels Election and Little Children, which were made into award-winning movies.
The One Book One Belmont – OBOB – Planning Committee, made up of representatives of the library and various town departments and commissions, selected the book after reviewing suggestions from library patrons and staff. It is the first work of fiction selected for One Book One Belmont. Events are being planned for the fall in collaboration with the OBOB co-sponsoring organizations, and will be announced at a later date.
Please contact the reference desk at 617-993-2870 if you would like to request a copy of the book, which was released in paperback on May 22.
