Somewhere Over the Chenery: Saturday's Double Rainbow in Belmont

A rainbow is an optical and meteorological phenomenon that causes a spectrum of light to appear in the sky when the Sun shines on to droplets of moisture in the Earth's atmosphere.

They also stop traffic, send residents out of their homes and bring smiles to everyone who sees them.

Just after a short shower passed through town around 7 p.m. Saturday, the sun came out and a bright prominant double rainbow was seen throughout Belmont.

In a double rainbow, a second arc is seen outside the primary arc and has the order of its colours reversed: red facing toward the other one, in both rainbows.

This second rainbow is caused by light reflecting twice inside water droplets.
