Happy New Years: Belmont Schools Respond To Jewish High Holy Day

There are times when two important events occur on the same day; and the 2013-2014 Belmont School Year begins during the first of two of the most important religious observances for Jewish students and staff. 

The first Jewish High Holy Day, Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) begins at sundown on Wednesday, Sept. 4 – which is the first day of the new school year – and ending at sundown on Friday, Sept. 6. 

In a note on his blog – which Belmont Superintendent Dr. Thomas Kingston said reflects the position of staff and officials in each of the district's six schools – Belmont High School Principal Dr. Dan Richards told his own staff and teachers that Rosh Hashanah observances during the day typically include synagogue services followed by family gatherings. 

"Virtually all Jewish students and staff members will begin observing on Wednesday evening and will be absent on Thursday," Richards said, some absent in observance of the second day as well.

"Therefore, scheduling of school tests and quizzes should be avoided for Thursday and Friday and no homework should be due on those days. Students should be given ample opportunity to make up work they have missed during their absence(s) for religious observances," said Richards.

"I would like to thank everyone in advance for being sensitive and accommodating of Jewish families during these holy days," said Richards.

The second High Holy Day, Yom Kippur, begins at sunset on Friday, Sept. 13, effecting only student athletes participation in scheduled games.
