Severe Weather, Flash Flood Watch Issued for Region

Severe thunderstorms expected to bring torrential rainfall this evening and tonight.

Not again!

For the third time in eight days, the National Weather Service is predicting a rough day and night for Belmont and eastern Massachusetts, especially between 4 p.m. and midnight.

Despite cloud cover this morning, partial sunshine is expected to break through in the early afternoon, allowing for an unstable atmosphere, which will help build for multiple rounds of thunderstorms, the NWS said.

The first watch has just been issued for flash flooding. The flash flood watch will go into effect at 4 p.m.

A flash flood watch means conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding.

Other hazards expected from any severe thunderstorms today include damaging wind and large hail.

The NWS says isolated tornadoes are also possible today but the greatest risk for these storms is in western Massachusetts.

Last Wednesday, three heavy downpours in 90 minutes caused isolated flooding in Belmont including in the roadway under the commuter rail bridge. On Tuesday, threatening clouds passed by Belmont only to cause flooding on the South Shore.
