Belmont Unemployment Percentage Pops Up in June

The June seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate remains lower than the state, national rate.

The Belmont seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate jumped to 5 percent in June, an increase of nearly one percentage point from 4.2 percent in May, according to the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development that released the information on Tuesday, July 23.

The data translates to 691 residents seeking employment in June, an increase of 115 people from the May figure of 576.

The increase in the unemployment rate occurred as the labor force in Belmont increased by approximately 200 people from the previous month and as the number of residents who were employed increased by 88.

The increase in the unemployment rate is not that unusual in June as the rate jumped to 4.9 percent in June 2012.

While the Belmont rate is the highest percentage in the past year, it is significantly lower that the state-wide June seasonally unadjusted unemployment rate
of 7.4 percent and the 7.6 percent in the US.
