5 Things: Historical Society's Annual Meeting, Story Time at the Benton

Events occurring in Belmont on Tuesday, May 14.

1. The Belmont Historical Society will be held in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library beginning at 7:30 p.m. The 275 member society promotes greater understanding and appreciation of the history, residents, contributions and structure of the town of Belmont.

2. Journey to the wilds of Ecuador with Mark Hopkins at 1:15 p.m. at the Beech Street Center. Hopkins, whose recently had a photography exhibit at the Center, will take you on a virtual two-week trip to Ecuador, visiting cities include historic Quito, Amazonia and the Galapagos Islands. In his program, Hopkins records the many creatures found nowhere else on earth, all of them innocently tolerant of the presence of humans and explores the dramatic volcanic landscapes of the islands.

Benton Library's Pre-school Story Time is a 45-minute program geared toward children between 3 and 5. It features a variety of stories, as well as music, finger plays and/or a craft. Parents and caregivers must remain with their preschooler during the program. Sign up is not required. The program begins at 10 a.m.

4. Minuteman Technical Institute will be holding an open house for adults interested in its postgraduate programs beginning at 7 p.m. at its campus at 758 Marrett Rd. in Lexington. Adult student can apply to the MTI programs to hone their skills in a technical area, retrain for new employment or learn new technical skills. For more information, go to www.minutemanti.org or call 781-861-7151.
