5 Things You Need to Know Today: December 17

Register for tomorrow's holiday dessert tasting/recipe swap, speak to the selectmen, sing with Rubi.

1. Register for Belmont Public Library's first ever Holiday Dessert Tasting and Recipe Swap. The swap will happen tomorrow Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Assembly Room but you need to sign up by today to enter. Here's a chance to share your recipes and discover new ones. And you do not have to be a baker to attend. Everyone will be able to sample the treats and take home copies of recipes.

Here's how the event works: Desserts must be meant to be served at room temperature. Please bring enough desserts for at least 20 people to sample and 20 copies of the recipe. All recipes will be posted at the library afterwards for those who missed out.

Bakers must register in advance by signing up online or by calling the Reference Desk at 617-993-2870. To register online, to the library's website, www.belmont.lib.ma.us, click on Events, go to 'Holiday Dessert Tasting,' and click on the hand.

2. If you have questions about the town or town services, the Belmont Board of Selectmen has carved out time between 6:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Selectmen's Room on the second floor of Town Hall which a member of the board will speak to citizens or in the very beginning of the meeting if you would like to speak on the record.

3. Music & Movement with Rubi is a movement and music program recommended for ages 3 to 5 but 2 year olds are welcome. The fun starts at 10:30 a.m. in the Assembly Room of the Belmont Public Library.

4. The popular Belmont Municipal Light Department's 2013 historical calendar is now available at the Department's business office located at 40 Prince St. Since there are only a limited number printed, there is a limit of one calendar per customer account. First come, first served.

5. On this day in 1969, the United States Air Force closes its study of UFOs, dubbed Project Blue Book, stating that sightings are generated as a result of "A mild form of mass hysteria, Individuals who fabricate such reports to perpetrate a hoax or seek publicity, psychopathological persons, and misidentification of various conventional objects."
