5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 12

Traveling the world in films, bite-sized tales and beautiful tickets.

1. The begins a series of six films from French-speaking countries, with Monsieur Lazhar, one of this year’s Oscar nominees for best foreign film. The “French Twist” series take place at 7:30 p.m. on six Mondays at the and on two successive Thursdays: March 22 and 29. Price is $10. All films are New England premieres; together they are part of the Francophone Celebration of New England sponsored by the French Consulate and Quebec Delegation of Boston. 

2. Books and Bites, the library's monthly book review program that features presentations by local residents, Belmont Public Library staff and local authors,  at 11 a.m. in the Assembly Room of the  Marcia Lynch will discuss "The Widower's Tale" by Julia Glass and "No Mark Upon Her" by Deborah Crombie. Librarian Miriam MacNair will discuss "Persuasion" by Jane Austen. All are welcome to attend this free program.  Refreshments will be provided.

3. Residents will get the chance Belmont High School Performing Arts Company present the musical, "Beauty and the Beast," the heart-warming, family musical with elaborate costumes and technical effects. Tickets are available at www.ticketstage.com and also at in Belmont Center for $15 and at the door for $18. There is also a limited number of student tickets for $10 (partially obstructed view)

4. So what's up for bid at the Foundation for Belmont Education? An afternoon team party for up to 20 at Belmont's unofficial town pub, Conley's Pub and Grille which includes pizza, wings, chicken fingers, soda and a cash bar. Valued at $225. The top bid: $75. Go online to get into the bidding.

5. This week Belmont Patch's "Best of" feature asks residents to vote for their favorite place in the area to attend St. Patrick's Day.
