5 Things You Need to Know Today: March 13

Early release for the elementary schools, story time for the youngsters and Earl Grey's birthday.

1. It's early, early release Wednesday for Belmont's four elementary schools. And there is more to come this March.

2. Story time for 1s is a great time for toddlers under 24 months. Share simple stories, songs, finger plays, nursery rhymes and puppets. From 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Children's Room of theBelmont Public Library.

3. It was reported that less than 10 percent of state income tax returns are done using a paper form. So why not join the paperless revolution by paying your Belmont Municipal Light bill on-line by using this form. It's simple and free.

4. Duplicate Bridge Club meets from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Beech Street Center at 266 Beech St. Every Wednesday the club holds American Contact Bridge League-sanctioned games. All are welcome to play. Cost is $5. Phone: 339-223-6484 for more information.

5. On this day in 1764, Earl Grey, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was born. Yes, the tea is named after Grey who had blend speciality made by a Chinese mandarin for him to suit the water at Howick Hall, the family seat in Northumberland, in an effort to offset the preponderance of lime in the local water. Lady Grey used it to entertain in London as a political hostess, and it proved so popular that she was asked if it could be sold to others, which is how Twinings, the original tea company that still exists, began selling Earl Grey tea.
