On this day in 1846, defying her father and family, poet Elizabeth Barrett, one of the most prominent poets of the Victorian era ("Sonnets from the Portuguese" that includes Sonnet XLIII "How Do I Love Thee?") elopes with fellow poet Robert Browning ("Love Among the Ruins," "The Pied Piper of Hamelin") to Paris what at the time was seen as both scandalous – she was disinherited by her family and never returned to England – and the triumph of romantic love.
