Belmont Home of the Week: 76 Common St.

This vintage 1858 Victorian has sheltered the Underwood family since before Belmont was a town.

This may sound hard to believe, but this signature Victorian home on Common St. has remained in the same family for 144 years. The Underwood family has experienced generations of happiness since this home was built in 1858 – a year before Belmont was incorporated as a town – and while the address has remained unchanged, the home has evolved with the times. There is something, however, that has comfortably settled in the home, and that is its character. As evident from its exterior, this home flaunts many period and architectural features that define its historical spirit and contribute to an eclectic blend of designs.

The first floor begins with an elongated living room that features French doors, a fireplace and a charming curved window seat and an expansive dining area with another fireplace. The open kitchen offers a tremendous amount of cabinet and counter space and the center island work station/breakfast bar overlooks a spacious, casual sunken dining area with a warm knotty pine floor, pellet stove, vaulted ceiling with skylights and sliding door that open into the rear deck. This level also includes an intimate fireplaced library with custom millwork, a mudroom and laundry room.

The second floor offers a magnificent master suite with a fireplace, remodeled dressing room, walk-in closet with custom storage and a full, deluxe private bath, four generously-sized family bedrooms and two full baths. The finished basement provides inviting recreational and leisure options with a large family room and alternative sleeping accommodations with live-in help quarters and a full bath.
