Blizzard Barreling Into Belmont Friday, Saturday

At the height of the storm, snow could be coming down at two-to-four inches per hour, accompanied by thunder and lightning.

A potential historic winter storm and blizzard is knocking at Belmont's door and is now expected to leave up to two feet of snow across much of the region beginning Friday, according to the latest forecast issued by the National Weather Service at 4:25 a.m. Thursday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Watch for Belmont and the area inside Route 495 surrounding Boston stretching into New Hampshire and Connecticut beginning Friday and lasting through Saturday morning.

At the height of the storm around midnight Friday/Saturday, white-out conditions are likely as snow falls between two-to-four inches an hour as wind from the Northeast will blow at 20 to 30 mph with gusts reaching 55 mph.

"The worst of the storm will hit late Friday and Friday night and will wind down Saturday morning. However, lingering effects from blowing and drifting snow, blocked roads and other travel delays are likely to linger into much of the weekend," according to Alex Sosnowski, expert senior meteorologist at AccuWeather.com

Snow totals are growing by the hour, at least on the weather forecasts.

WCVB Channel 5 meteorologists report that one model of the storm would dump 25 inches of snow in Boston, but only 9 inches in Marshfield, so the snow total will depend on where you live, and where the rain/snow line.
