Boys' Hockey Rocks Brookline

Boys eek out a win while girls' slow start sees them fall to Burlington.

It has been a rough season for Belmont Boys' Ice Hockey: the team is a bit small for many of the team's in what many have called the toughest public school league – Middlesex, Big School – in Massachusetts.

So it was a chance for Belmont to shine when Brookline came to Skip Viglirolo Skating Rink to take on the host Maruaders Monday night, Jan. 30.

Forty-five minutes later, six Belmont skaters – including five seniors – scored goals as the Marauders won a 6-1 blow out over the Warriors.

Team scoring leader Brian Gramolini and Matt Madden scored within two and a half minutes of each other in the middle of the first period while Kevin Viglirolo and Chris Costello lit up the lamp six seconds apart within the first 1:30 of the second to seal the win.

Finishing up the scoring were Chris Garrett (10 minutes in the second) and junior Pat Quinn (with five minutes left in the game) who both ended up with two points for the night. Senior goalie John Egbert let only a single shot get by him to register another strong outing.

Boys hoops bounce back, Girls' bounced

When he was hit with his second foul within the first four minutes of the game, it appeared that senior captain John Dillon would not be a factor in Belmont's home game against Burlington Red Devils in Belmont's Wenner Field House Tuesday night, Jan. 31.

But long-range shooting early – the first four baskets by Belmont were threes including a pair by senior Manny Cabral – kept the Marauders close and allowed Dillon to come back in and close the deal, scoring 23 points to lead Belmont over Burlington, 56-54, and propel the team back into the playoff picture with an 8-7 record.

Earlier in the night, a very slow start by Belmont Girl hoopsters, three points in the first quarter, and a poor night from the charity strip - 21 missed free throws – saw the Marauders lose to Burlington, 51-35. Junior Katie Leinbach was the team's go-to player with 14 points, with Olivia Lyons scoring 10, all from inside. In addition, freshman guard Caroline Niland hit a three and Micaela McKay hit one in the final quarter.
