Belmont Police give frozen treat coupons to safety-conscious kids

Throughout the month of August, Belmont Police Officers randomly pass out coupons for free frozen yogurt at TCBY on Leonard Street to kids wearing helmets as they bike or to kids sitting in cars with safety belts on.
Nine-year-old Nathan Morgan was so surprised that he nearly fell off his bike when a Belmont Police Officer “Pulled him over.” Acting Police Chief Ronald Blanchette said it is the first time in recent memory that the Belmont Police Department has undertaken such a program.

Teen dies in tragic accident at McLean
A.J. McLaehern of Scituate was a popular and likable teenager. At the time of the accident, he was working for his father whose company was excavating seven tanks from McLean property. A.J. was part of a crew digging out the tanks. At one point, he had helped dig a 10 foot hole to expose one of the tanks. He jumped in the hole to continue work when suddenly, the dirt fell around him and knocked him unconscious. Despite the efforts of the work crew, firefighters, and McLean staff, AJ died from his injuries.

AT&T questioned on cable TV
AT&T’s proposal to replace Cablevision in Belmont includes the possibility of high speed internet by 2001 and the installation of a fiber optic network. Town Attorney Peter Epstein posed 35 written questions to AT&T, to which they will respond on August 22.

New court for Old World sport
Bocce, an old world sport, now has a new court at Payson Park. The surface is packed gravel like the one used for the Special Olympics. Belmont SPORT is putting the court to good use. Susan Weiner, the Director of SPORT, said members had been using a grass court for ten years and she is quite pleased with the new court. SPORT is an organization which serves those with special needs.
