Belmont Gallery of Art "Off the Clock" Show

The Belmont Gallery of Art presents Off the
Clock
an exhibit showcasing the work of Belmont ‘s Art Teachers Sept.
20-Oct. 20. 2013

BELMONT, MA-The Belmont Gallery of Art presents Off the Clock, a show of work
by Belmont art teachers, Sept. 20-Oct. 20. An opening reception for the exhibit
will take place in the gallery Friday, Sept. 20, 6-8pm. Events are free and
open to the public.

Off the Clock offers a unique glimpse at the
work of artists who share a common thread in their dedication to teaching art
to students in Belmont schools. The show features work made these teaching
artists in a variety of media including oils, acrylics, ceramics, fibers, printmaking,
photography, sculpture and collage.

Initially conceived of by Burbank School
artist/teacher Nicole Pond in 2008, the first Off the Clock show was seen as an
opportunity for people in the community to see what art teachers were creating
as individual artists. This year’s BGA Off the Clock exhibit continues to
showcase such work.

“I thought it was important for people to
physically see what you create,” says Pond. “Here we are, teachers with all
these credentials, discussing art history, color mixing, and art-making
techniques with our students, but without their seeing how we use the same
information. I thought it was time to let people see what we were creating as
artists on our own time—off the clock.”

Belmont Gallery Committee member Rebecca
Richards agrees, “I think it’s important for Belmont students and their
families and other gallery visitors, to see the art created by our community’s
dedicated art teachers.”

Artists participating in Off the Clock
include Andrew Roy, Kathleen Byrnes, Danette English, Regina Kalajian,
Katherine Kelley, Catherine Larkin, Mark Milowsky, Kristen Ripley, Sarah
Libertini, Nicole Pond and Kathy Jo Solomon.

Since opening its doors in
July 2005, the Belmont Gallery of Art has presented over fifty shows featuring
the work of dozens of local and regional artists. It has offered a professional
architecturally significant space for artists to display their work and
visitors to view such work. The BGA has been praised
throughout the community for its support and promotion of the arts and culture
in Belmont. In 2007, the Belmont Gallery of Art was honored with a Gold Star
Award from the Mass. Cultural Council for its work with artists.
