A diagnosis of diabetes does not have to mean the elimination of favorite foods. Unless the doctor has said otherwise, no food is “forbidden” because of diabetes. A heart healthy diet low in saturated and trans fat, added sugars, and sodium, with foods from all food groups, is best for everyone, especially since people with diabetes are at greater risk for heart disease.
Shaw’s Supermarket will host a free “Eating Healthy With Diabetes” educational program that will offer tips for helping the whole family make healthier food choices on February 2 at 10AM.
The two- hour program begins at the pharmacy with information about the importance of testing for control and ways to help friends and family members avoid being diagnosed with diabetes. It continues with a 90-minute dietitian-led walking tour that will take participants on an educational stroll throughout the grocery store. Instruction and discussion will focus on reading food labels, identifying carbohydrates and making healthier food choices that can possibly help people with diabetes live longer and experience a better quality of life.
During the tour, participants also will learn about other diabetes care and educational services provided by specially trained Shaw’s pharmacists. These services, which can help patients better manage their condition, include medication assessments, diabetes care classes and individual sessions and help monitoring blood glucose levels.
