Maya Edwards; Belmont Student, Boston Resident

Chenery Middle School will open its doors this evening at 6 p.m. to remember Edwards.

Maya Edwards, a Dorchester resident who was a student in the Belmont School District and preparing to enter Belmont High School this September, died Tuesday, July 2, in Boston.

Edwards, who died after a long battle with cancer, was 13.

A funeral service will be held today, Monday, July 8, in the Morning Star Baptist Church, 1257 Blue Hill Ave., Mattapan, at 10 a.m. Burial to follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Roslindale. 

Today, Monday, July 8, at 6 p.m., the School Department is opening the school to welcome all members of the Chenery community "to come together and support each other as we begin to cope with this loss," according to CMS Principal Kristen St. George.

The community will gather in the auditorium for some words and a moment of silence and then meet together in groups. 

Maya was the daughter of Ernest Edwards and Sylvia Kinn-Edwards of Dorchester,  sister of Jared Edwards of Dorchester and Danale Pope of Texas.
