William Edgar Heyd

Born and raised in Belmont.

William Edgar Heyd, 83, died May 3, 2012, at Indian River Medical Center, Vero Beach.

Heyd was born in Belmont and lived in Vero Beach for five years, coming from Orleans, Mass. He was a graduate of Belmont High School in 1946. He volunteered with the Belmont Civilian Defense during World War II. After high school, he served in the Army from 1946 to 1948. In 1950, he began a career in retail sales as a manager for the F.W. Woolworth Co. and later the Robinson's Five and Ten stores. He was a Mason in Belmont

He became a police officer with the Town of Orleans, where he served for 22 years, retiring as prosecutor for the Town of Orleans Police Department in 1999.

He was a member of Christ by the Sea United Methodist Church, Vero Beach, a member of the American Legion, Orleans, and the Winthrop, Mass., Rotary Club.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Shirley Dawn Heyd of Vero Beach; sons, Bill Heyd of Oakland, Calif., and Mark Heyd of Mashpee, Mass.; daughters, Linda Backus of Harwich, Mass., Pamela Geng of Las Vegas and Laura Bond of Southlake, Texas; sisters, Alice Hultgren of Reading, Mass., and Ruth Rask of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mildred Neff.
