Belmont Fire Log: Gas Line Stumps Tree Service on Lawrence Lane

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Don't BBQ your house
Aug. 12 – Let's say a bit past a quarter after 8 p.m., Engine 2 was sent to a Hill Road home to investigate a call of a fire hazard on a second-floor balcony. When they arrived, the resident who called told the Engine 2 crew that the actual hazard was on Pond Street. Sure enough, firefighters discovered a charcoal-fueled grill which was way too close to the building. The occupant was informed of the regulation with regards to outside grilling and advised not to BBQ there.

Stop this crazy thing!
Aug. 14 - At 10 'til 2 p.m., Engine 1 took off to a C Street two-family but rather then being sent for a possible fire, the alarm had to do with too much water. Turned out that the hot water faucet on the bathroom sink on the second floor of the home broke. When they arrived, a small amount of water from the second floor leaked down to the first floor into the basement. But for some reason, there was no shut off valve under the sink. So the firefighters found and shut down the water valves for the second floor bathroom located in the basement. They also turn off the hot water heater for the second floor, including the gas. The homeowner was advised to contact a plumber about the mishegas.

Cutting it a little too close

Aug. 15 – Just before 2:30 p.m., fire crews rushed over to Lawrence Lane after a tree company had cut a main gas line to the house while attempting to grind down a tree stump. The firefighters quickly shut off the gas flow at a main valve located on the sidewalk.

Cleaning mishap
Aug. 16 – A few minutes after noon, an Agassiz Avenue homeowner was cleaning their basement – a bit of pre-fall tidying up – when they bumped a shelf and down came a quart of citronella torch oil onto the floor and that is dangerous. Firefighters contained the spill with SpeedyDry© and disposed of the bottle.
