Belmont Fire Log: Lightnin' Hits Around Town

Incidents and emergencies handled by the Belmont Fire Department.

Gas from on high
July 23 – A quarter past noon, Engine 1 took off to the new clubhouse at Belmont Country Club for a carbon monoxide alarm going off. Engine 1's crew using their detection devices did find 57 parts per million of carbon monoxide in the kitchen. Then the fire personnel looked skyward: they found workmen on the roof with gas-powered equipment which was causing the high carbon monoxide readings in the kitchen below. The equipment was shut down. That did the job.

Icy smoke
July 23 – Just after half past 1 p.m., Engine 2 rushed over to the intersection of Blanchard and Hamilton roads after calls came from concerned residents who reported "smoke" in street, possible a manhole on fire. Turns out a delivery truck had dropped a piece of dry ice in the street that had dissipated prior to the crew arrived.

Lightnin', part 1

July 23 – At 4:30 p.m., Engine 1 was sent to McLean Hospital after a building was hit by lightning. They found the fire alarm system was put out-of-whack. They restored the system.

Lightnin', part 2
June 23 – At 4:35 p.m., Engine 2, Ladder 1 and Rescue 1 rushed over to 40 Prince St. after the Belmont Municipal Light Department was hit by lightning and soon after there was a smokey odor in the building. On arrival, the crews did find a slight smell in the computer and phone room. The building was checked with thermal imaging cameras and nothing was found. Soon the odor dissipated on its own.

July 26 – At 9:30 p.m. the entire Belmont Fire Department rushed over to a Trapelo Road multi-family where the fire alarms were going off. Turns out the alarms were for a late-night snack burning in the toaster oven on the first-floor kitchen.
