Belmont Man Arrested in Watertown For String of Car Break Ins

Police arrested a Belmont man after he was caught going through a car on Edenfield Road on Oct. 9 at 12:38 a.m. They believe he is behind a string of car break ins around Watertown.

The suspect, Maximillian B. Smith-Marder, 24, was stopped by an alert resident, said Watertown Police Lt. Michael Lawn.

"The boyfriend of resident was leaving when he observed an individual inside his girlfriends' father's car," Lawn said. "The suspect saw him and took off running, but the boyfriend chased him and caught him."

Police found items from other break ins when they searched Smith-Marder, Lawn said.

Smith-Marder is also suspected of breaking into many other cars in Watertown, Lawn said.

"He is the prime suspect in committing a number of breaking and enterings over the past few weeks," Lawn said. "Additional charges will be coming."

Smith-Marder of 44 Barlett Ave. Apt. 1, was arrested on charges of nighttime breaking and entering of a vehicle and receiving stolen property, Lawn said.
