The incident began at around 10:30 p.m. on Saturday when police responded to a report of a cab driver robbed near 130 River St., according to Guigno. The driver had dropped Mahoney at the location. When the driver went to make change for Mahoney, the Belmont man allegedly took the driver’s moneybag and fled down the Charles River walkway. Police later located Mahoney on the path. Mahoney allegedly confessed to police, Guigno said.

Police recovered the moneybag and some of the money, Guigno said. Mahoney had a knife on him during the robbery, but did not use it, Guigno said.
